Levi Chan is currently a second year Fine Art Painting & Drawing student studying at the University of Northampton. His work is based on an ongoing investigation involving the human figure, predominantly of the male gender. He explores the nature of identity, self-expression, and the relationship between oneself and others. Chan is particularly interested in the incorporation of mixed media and layering techniques to tell one’s story and inner monologue within a specific context of time and space. The layering technique is often used to create a morphing effect, that something is more than it appears, creating depth emotionally and physically. Mixed media is an integral part of the making process, creating different surface and visual textures for raw, honest portrayals of his subjects. He is inspired by the likes of the Chapman Brothers, Frida Kahlo, Raymond Pettibon, and Jenny Saville.
