My personal studio work explores natural processes that the human body endures within life from obligatory functions as simple as breathing to almost prodigious encounters such as pregnancy and sex. This fascination with the human body intrigues the work and is the main influence of my practice, particularly focusing on the female form.

The work is based on fictional events exploring intimacy and sexuality, it relies on the bodily functions and physical matter as the subject. By delving into intense research journeys about the history of these human functions, the work develops into unmercifully honest art. The two main disciplines of my work are a mixture of drawing and painting, by using a mix of mediums I can build a textural surface onto the canvas.

Drawing and painting from observation comes closest to the working of my mind, it is a natural language that is a way of thinking, seeing and understanding the world around me. The process is more flexible than any language as it has the power to express thoughts in a universal way, to communicate with authenticity. By observational drawing consistently and drawing everything I know and see, I have begun to render the human subject in its true character.

Layers and washes of paint are then formed upon the canvas to create depth and a narrative within the piece. I enjoy working with paint as it has its own movement that you often can’t control, it attempts to escape the canvas. My paintings have their own momentum and autonomy; out of my control. The process is a physical observation, expression, obsession and dissection of my thoughts that can only be expressed through line.

The rushing liquid can only be tamed by stacking considered tonal marks; to pin down the form, these clashing brush marks build tension within the piece. The paintings are formed of multiple layers, the figures are stacked on top of each other and washed away with smears and washes of paint.
